Dear donors/funders,

The K12 Counts program is run by a dedicated and passionate team, highly focused on bringing about educational excellence. We would like to provide you with a short or a detailed grant proposal for funding our projects.

We hope you have read the book Lesson Up! The author and founder of K12 Counts, Sumant S. Pendharkar, has included his previous book, Raising Yourself: Making the Right Choices – A self-parenting book for ages 10 to 14, in the appendix of this book. It’s a 2-in–1.

Writing and researching the book Raising Yourself, identified troubling but curable issues, reinforced by repeated behaviors. Those experiences inspired Sumant to found K12 Counts. The organization’s process is to provide coaching to parents, to increase their skills in enhancing their child’s educational journey.

A pilot program executed by K12 Counts at a high school in San Jose, California gave Sumant and the team insight into what holds back student academic success. The experience gave Sumant a “eureka” moment that prompted him to write Lesson Up! Thus summing up his 30 plus years of experiences, and observations on how education is approached in the US, in contrast to other countries. And most importantly, what will it take to fix educational outcomes for students not only in K through 12, but also setting the foundation for postsecondary success.

Our program at the high school was implemented a few years before the COVID-19 pandemic struck, and sent students home, thus seriously disrupting learning. The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), or known as the Nation’s Report Card:

Mathematics and Reading Scores of Fourth- and Eighth-Graders Declined in Most States During Pandemic, Nation’s Report Card Shows
“Mathematics scores declined for both fourth- and eighth-graders in nearly all districts and states….”

WASHINGTON (October 24, 2022)—A majority of states saw scores decline for fourth- and eighth-graders in mathematics and reading between 2019 and 2022, according to the latest results from the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), also known as The Nation’s Report Card, released today by the U.S. Department of Education’s National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). The national average score declines in mathematics for fourth- and eighth-graders were the largest ever recorded in that subject.

“The results show the profound toll on student learning during the pandemic, as the size and scope of the declines are the largest ever in mathematics,” said NCES Commissioner Peggy G. Carr. “The results also underscore the importance of instruction and the role of schools in both students’ academic growth and their overall wellbeing. It’s clear we all need to come together—policymakers and community leaders at every level—as partners in helping our educators, children, and families succeed.”

In the Commissioner’s message there is NO mention of the parents’ role in their child’s academic growth and overall wellbeing.

The schools cannot do it alone.

Our program is scalable, and we have a team ready to take on the challenge of breaking the current cycle of low achievement for good. Our students need our help, and we need your financial assistance to get the job done.

We promise to use your funds well.

Thank you,
